SPECIAL SHAPES
What are special shapes?
Special shapes are one of a kind tiles researched and developed on a per-project basis. These terra cotta elements can be manufactured by either extrusion (Using a custom die) or by hand.
When are special shapes needed?
Special shapes are needed when the project's design calls for bespoke conditions and details that fall out of the existing library of tile shapes. These conditions could be born from both aesthetic and technical requirements. Special shapes allow the designer to create a truly one of a kind facade for a deeper connection of the facade to the building. Technical solutions would include complicated corners or trim details and coordination with other materials used on the project, to list a few.

Benefits of special shapes?
Special shapes allow for a tremendous amount of control and expression to go into the facade's design. Complicated conditions and coordination issues can easily be solved. Hand made elements allow conditions to be possible that normally would not be possible utilizing solely extrusion-based manufactured tile.
Examples of special shapes
BP Studio by Claudio Nardi Architects
Custom hand made tiles for the corner condition. These tiles were manufactured with a matching depression at the sunscreen's open areas for the facade's completely coordinated aesthetic.
BARRIERE AUTOSTRADALI A1 by Archea Associati Studio
Custom shaped extruded tiles run in horizontal lengths down the architectural sound barrier.
Nembro Library by Archea Associati Studio
Custom extruded and glazed tiles manufactured to resemble mini books made of terra cotta. When viewing a tile from a cross-section, void spaces shaped as letters spell out the name Nembro.
